„What does Heimat mean?“, fragte er, und überrumpelte mich damit.

Was ist also Heimat? „Well,“ fing ich an, „it can be both a place and a feeling. I think it’s something very personal, and you will get a hundred different answers if you asked a hundred Germans what Heimat is. To me, it is more of a feeling really. Heimat is feeling like myself, feeling like I don’t have to pretend to be someone else, where people accept me. That happens to be my family. So, yes, it is a place to me as well because whenever I return to my home town, I feel like I am at home. It’s where I grew up, became the person I am, well, not entirely, but for a great part, where I experienced first love, first heartbreak, what it means to be a part of a family.“ Er nickte mit dem Kopf. „That really is a question no one has ever asked me before. It’s really not that easy to answer so I can make you understand. I feel like there is a lot of cultural meaning as well.“ Daran glaube ich noch heute.

„What does Heimat mean?“, fragte er, und überrumpelte mich damit.
